Some projects stay with you long after the edit is done. The MKUD Svetlost 65 Year Anniversary was one of those. A celebration of 65 years of Macedonian cultural dance in Melbourne — and we had the privilege of capturing every moment of it.
The Brief
The client wanted a full cinematic production — photography, videography, and a highlight reel that could be shared with the community and preserved as a keepsake for generations. The event was held at a large venue with hundreds of attendees, multiple dance performances, and a rich visual atmosphere of traditional costumes and choreography.
The Setup
For an event of this scale, preparation is everything. We arrived two hours before the event started to scout the venue — checking lighting conditions, identifying the best angles for stage coverage, and setting up our equipment. We used the Sony A7RV with our GM 24–70mm lens for the primary photography, and had our camera gimbal ready for smooth cinematic videography throughout the performances.
The Challenge
Cultural events present a unique challenge — the lighting is often dramatic and fast-changing, the performers are constantly moving, and you only get one chance to capture a particular moment. There's no second take when a dancer lifts their partner in the air or the crowd erupts in applause.
This is where experience and instinct come in. Knowing when to anticipate a moment before it happens — that's what separates a good shot from a great one.
The Result
The final delivery included a full photography gallery of over 400 edited images and a 90-second cinematic highlight reel that captured the emotion, energy and cultural pride of the evening. Watching it back with the client and seeing their reaction — that's exactly why we do this work.
